Why distance matters. The farther you are from the base, the more error creeps in. A typical survey receiver is rated about 8 mm + 1 ppmParts per million. In GPS specs, 1 ppm means 1 mm of extra error for every kilometer you are from the base.More side to side. 1 ppm means 1 mm of extra error for every kilometer from the base. So 10 km away adds about 1 cm, and 30 km adds about 3 cm. Getting a fix also gets slower and less reliable as distance grows. Network RTKReal-time kinematic. A way to make GPS accurate to about an inch by getting live corrections from a nearby base station.More (VRSVirtual reference station. The network blends nearby stations to create a pretend base right next to you, which keeps the baseline short.More) models errors between stations, so network spacing matters more than any single station. NOAA CORSContinuously Operating Reference Station. A permanent GPS receiver that records satellite data all day, every day.More sites are data stations: many feed state real-time networks, but not every one streams public RTK.
